Racing event pays honour to former club president

The memory of the late Peter Waterford, former mayor and race club president is to be perpetuated with a race named in his honour.

Race club publicity officer Sandy Thorne, announced that the new, sixth race on the 2013 program, recently granted to Lightning Ridge by Racing NSW, and to be sponsored by Dubbo City Toyota, will be known as The Dubbo City Toyota Peter Waterford Memorial Race.

“Following Peter’s funeral, I wrote to David Hayes, principal of the dealership, asking if he would allow this, enclosing the front-page story from The Ridge News announcing Peter’s passing.

“David phoned as soon as he received the letter, agreeing to honour Peter in this way,” Ms Thorne said.

“Our president Tony Dowton and our committee are grateful to David Hayes for this generous gesture, as are, I’m sure, everyone in this town and shire.”

On August 1, the thoroughbred’s birthday (including past secretary and champion filly Lauren Molyneux), the race club will meet at the Bowling Club at 6pm to discuss new ideas to make the 2013 race day even better.

Everyone is welcome to attend and submit your ideas.
