Piranhas make a splash at Coonamble

01 Dec, 2011 09:16 AM
The Lightning Ridge Piranhas Swim Club started their season last weekend with their first official meet in Coonamble.

Most of the team travelled down in a bus, kindly donated by Katrina and Alistair Clein of North West Bus Lines, and stayed overnight for the two-day carnival.

Starting midday Saturday with the individual medley and two convincing wins, one by Rory Cheal and the other by Lauren Hughes.

The Piranhas looked like a team to be reckoned with in their new black and red swimmers and their competition knew it.

The competition was tough and the program was full. Our little Piranhas Jock McKenzie and Savannah Chesworth did well in their first carnival both gaining third placings in the 17 metre breaststroke.

Kyh Samuelsson won the 33 metre breaststroke and came in third in the freestyle, butterfly and backstroke.

Tallulah Chesworth won the 33 metre butterfly, second in breaststroke and third in backstroke. Luca Cheal placed fourth in the 50m breaststroke, fifth in freestyle, breaststroke and butterfly, these swims were all personal best times for Luca. Well done to these little ones giving it a go.

Lauren won gold in the individual medley, 50m and 100m fly, 50m and 100m breaststroke, 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, 50m backstroke, she won the skins and the dash for cash. She broke numerous records and is in red-hot form.

Rory won gold in the individual medley, 50m and 100m fly, 50m and 100m breaststroke, 50m and 100m backstroke, 50m and 100m freestyle, bronze in the 200m freestyle and second in the skins, achieving massive personal best times and great results. Zarleigh Jones won silver in fly, breaststroke and backstroke and bronze in freestyle, also achieving personal best times.

Liam Hughes won silver in breaststroke and freestyle. Oscar Cheal, Arabella and Portia McKenzie and Emma-Lea McKay all had great races, many breaking personal best times, finishing just out of placings.

The highlight of the day were the relays. Luca, Kyh and Tallulah combined with Jock from Coonamble in the under 8’s 4x50m relay, swimming a great race, just coming in fourth. Rory, Lauren, Bella and Zarleigh dominated the under 12’s 4x50m relay, finishing first and close to the record.
