Local bowling duo Bob Newman and Judy Greenfield travelled to Narrabri at the weekend, where they claimed victory in the zone finals of the mixed pairs.
"We didn't go there very confident of winning," Judy said, but in the end they made it look easy as they won both their games by such convincing margins that the other teams surrendered before the finish.
In the first game, against Gunnedah, they won 24-12 and the opposition called off the game after 19 ends.
In the second game, against Armidale, they did even better and were in front by 28-9 when the game was called off, again after the 19th end.
Because mixed pairs don't go to the State level the Zone finals were as far as they could go.
However, it is still a significant achievement, especially considering they hadn't played together before and only managed to get in a couple of games before the tournament started.
"It was really good and we're absolutely thrilled to have won," Judy said.
Bob, however, was a little more laconic: "Not too bad for a couple of mugs."
Both players wanted to thank the Lightning Ridge Bowling Club for all the support they received.
