Women's rugby takes off

20 Jun, 2002 08:29 AM
Women's rugby union is taking off in Lightning Ridge, with the strongly formed school team a top contender in the zone.

Coach Adam Johnston said the formation of a rugby union team for high school girls started last year, with an initial team of 15.

He said back then the girls were novices to the game, but built themselves up finishing third in the State competition at the end of the season.

He said so far this year the girls had won the first game on a forfeit from Walgett, played their second game, which was in actual fact their first match, against Tamworth in Wee Waa and brought back a convincing win.

A game was played towards the end of last month, and saw the Ridge win 54-12.

"That game saw Shari Stanford kick brilliantly.

"She also made some conversions from the sideline and scored a try," he said.

Mr Johnston said some of the other team players to score tries included Amelia Maxwell, captain Cassie Skuthorpe, Jodi Brown, Ereehna Pitt and Chloe Brown, while Kimberly Wood managed a double try.

Mr Johnston said this year's team had been training twice a week since February.

"The original squad started with 24 girls and now we've got down to a core group of 17 players.

He said the girls that had played last year and were part of the team again this season showed that their skills continued to develop.

"Their confidence is building with that and their combinations are becoming stronger on the field," he said.

Mr Johnston said the players had shown strong team spirit during their first match.

"If there was a rough shot by Tamworth, the girls would support one another, which is really great."

Mr Johnston said there were some new girls who hadn't played before in this season's team, but they were taken on board and supported by girls from last year's team.

"The level of skill at the moment in the team is showing that the younger players are coming of age, and it looks like the school team will be good for next year's competition," Mr Johnston said.

He said the girls rugby union team would come up against Tomaree High School, near Nelson Bay, for their next game in the current round in division one, with a date still to be determined.

"Regardless of how the girls fare this year, the players have proven themselves as excellent ambassadors for their school and the community," Mr Johnston said.
