In more challenging circumstances extra float fishing 'finesse' is required.
Lets look at some examples.
For instance when I go blackfish fishing I am a stickler for detail.
I use the old trick of adding enough weight so that the float is sitting just visible above the water.
This way when a fish sucks on the bait the float dips with as little resistance as is possible.
For another example, take trout fishing with mudeyes at night in instances when the float cannot be seen.
Firstly a clear bubble float is filled with water to make it heavy, which allows for good casting distance.
Now trout are more of a gulp-on-the-move fish that don't stop and suck or graze on a bait like the blackfish do.
So using a very small light-gauged hook around size 14 will help tremendously.
One last example is game fishing from the rocks. Standard fare is to suspend a live bait under a balloon.
The balloon is usually attached with around one to three pound mono line.
I have missed too many fish with this technique though over the years.
I now use an elastic band to attach the balloon to the line.
Until next week, see you on the water,
