Time to get set for fishing trip

24 Nov, 2005 08:50 AM
It's that time of year again and the intrepid fishermen (and women) of Lightning Ridge are off to Copeton Dam to pit themselves against the fish that reside there.

This year is set to be one of the most successful yet, with at least 50 people, more than the number which attended last year, already booked in.

The trip will take place over the weekend of December 2, 3 and 4.

The participants will camp at Burrie Point and while away the days casting lines and (hopefully) reeling in plenty of fish.

This year the Copeton Competition coincides with the Copeton Inland Classic, which will also be held at the dam over the same weekend and Fishing Club members will be able to compete in both.

The weekend is not just about the fishing, there's also some serious partying to be done as well.

On the Saturday night the Christmas Party will be held in a beer tent, with food and drinks to be provided by the Fishing Club.

Club Secretary Treasurer, Kimbo, said the weekend is always a lot of fun.

"Everybody has a great time. It's well worth the trip."

She said those interested in going did not have to be existing members of the Fishing Club, but could join on the day for $20, giving them valid membership for the next 12 months.

She also said that participants would be advised to renew their fishing licences, because there will almost certainly be inspectors from the Fisheries Department at the event.

Although blue-green algae levels in Copeton Dam remained high, Kimbo said the dam level had risen by about 2m and much of the algae had

settled.

"We've been told that the children will be able to swim, although they are not allowed to drink the dam water," she said.

If you are interested in joining in the fun contact Ron or Kimbo at the Diggers Rest Hotel.
