The Gunnedah Soccer Carnival was a great day with a few surprises and a good result.
It was bitterly cold when the bus left the Ridge but the kids soon warmed up, playing up to six games each.
There were teams from Tamworth, Gunnedah, Coonabarabran, Narrabri, Walgett and Curlewis.
Coach Darren Reynolds did a great job looking after two teams, the 11s and 12s.
Although neither team won a game, they played well together and enjoyed the day.
Cooper and Simon Scoles scored one goal each for the 11s and Zach Strasek scored a goal for the 12s.
The 10s played hard and fast and didn't lose a game all day.
Damian O'Keefe scored a goal in the first game making it 1-0 and the next four games all resulted in nil-all draws.
Unfortunately for them the winners were decided on 'number of goals scored' so at the end of the day the under 10s came in third.
The excellent defence came largely from Mark Winch and Aidan Bedenikovic, with some great saves by goalie Paige Wilkinson.
The whole team played well and had a good result.
The under 9s played better than they have all season with surprising improvement in teamwork.
They won their first game 2-0 with goals scored by Dylan Maude and Geoffrey Lane.
They had two games resulting in nil-all draws and lost two games 1-0 and 2-0.
Angus Legg from the 8s joined the team and played well and Geoffrey Lane put on a good display of fancy footwork.
The biggest surprise of the day came from the under 7s.
Coach Sam Blackwell was jumping out of her skin, and for good reason, they seemed to play better and better every game they played.
The 7s made it to the finals and were pleased to get runners-up, receiving a trophy each.
Jayden Tramantanas scored an amazing five goals throughout the day and Ceejay, who played hard all day, scored two goals.
Thank you to all the coaches, parent helpers and supporters who travelled to Gunnedah for the day.
Thanks to Michael the bus driver, coach Ben Krisher who travelled on the bus and secretary Greg Lane for organising a successful day.
The next carnival is in Moree.
