Teams take up Challenge

25 Jul, 2002 09:00 AM
Two Barwon-Darling Rugby League representative sides, an Under 16s team and a seniors team went home victorious after winning the first Challenge Cup covering the ATSIC Murdi Paaki region, in Broken Hill against Outback Rugby League representative sides on Saturday.

The Under 16s marked a glorious win seizing the day 62-4, while the seniors did equally as well winning by a 30-point gap 40-10.

The representative sides from the Barwon-Darling division included players from Lightning Ridge, Walgett, Goodooga, Brewarrina and Bourke.

Three local guys represented the Ridge in the seniors team - Anthony McBride, Lionel Duncan and Luke Welsh, while four juniors were selected by their club to be a part of the Under 16s representative side - Phillip Spicer, Rob Jeffries, Adrian Bamford and Eddie Pitt.

Department of Sport and Recreation Lightning Ridge officer Rhonda Ashby said the Challenge Cup was funded in partnership between the department and the Murdi Paaki Regional Council which allocated $25,000 to enable the event to take place.

"It has given the regional guys a chance to take part in rugby league, especially because Country Rugby League doesn't have any involvement in the more remote areas in the state, such as here," she said.

Ms Ashby said the great thing was that the local players were also allowed to keep the jerseys and football gear they had used after the match.

She said plans were now being made to try and bring the outback division to the Barwon-Darling region next year for the second Challenge Cup, after the first was hailed a successful event.

"For a few local guys who had never played with the guys from the other towns in a team before, they pulled through really well in a brilliant effort.

"PJ (Phillip) Spicer and Adrian Bamford were exceptional players during the challenge, they showed a lot of drive, talent and determination," she said.
