Team ready to go national

27 Aug, 2003 05:21 PM
Last July, after less than four months training, eight teams (35 children) from Lightning Ridge Central School participated in the State Aero-Skool Challenge in Sydney.

Their coach Leanne Sweatman, who trained the teams as part of the school's fitness program was extremely proud of their efforts.

"The competition was stiff," Mrs Sweatman said.

"But, despite being up against teams (mostly from private schools) with years of experience and the polish that goes with it, our kids managed to shine"

Six of the teams placed in the competition and two of those teams were invited to compete in the Aero-skool Nationals, which will be held tomorrow in Melbourne.

Though one of the teams was unable to attend, the second team comprising Nikki Huckel, Sharnee Miller and Leonie Gawthorpe are more than ready to meet the challenge.

Mother of one of the team members, Liz Gawthorpe has worked with the girls, helping them put the final polish on their routine.

"After the state competition we had to fine tune the routine a little, we changed some of the hand movements and increased the overall difficulty of some of the moves."

These little pocket dynamos gave a sterling dress rehearsal performance in front of a very impressed Market Day crowd at the Bowling Club last Sunday.

"We thought that it would be a good to idea to do the dress rehearsal in front of a large number of people."

Mrs Gawthorpe then went on to speak positively about the experience.

"They have shown a lot of dedication. They work well together and the end result is a wonderful team."

Good luck in Melbourne girls.
