Swimmers on fire at Moree meet

19 Nov, 2004 08:28 AM
Four members of the Lightning Ridge swimming club travelled to Moree on the weekend to compete in the Moree swim meet.

They put in 110 per cent and all four achieved personal best times.

Brooke Holland had the crowd on their feet in the 100 metre breast stroke. During the first lap she was keeping up with the front group then, after the turn, she pushed up moving into second place and really gave it her all.

The crowd got behind her cheering and clapping as she powered past the leading girl and kept powering right to the end, coming first by quite a few metres.

Incredibly she knocked 20 seconds off her personal best time in this race.

The others also did well in their races, coming home with prizes, and Ben Morris came 6th in a dash for cash.

The Moree swim meet catered well for the 25 metre swimmers with five and six year olds getting in and giving it a go. It's important to know that these carnivals are all about having a great day, meeting people and giving kids the chance to improve on their own performances. Any parents who are keen to give their kids extra opportunities to improve, speak to the club about going to carnivals.

On Sunday there is a swim meet in St George and so far there are four club members going. This week has been great for our 25 metre class, they are training hard and learning heaps. The group is for any child who can swim 25 metres, which is half way up the pool.

They have a lot of fun with kick boards and flippers doing a variety of swimming activities. With the weather getting hotter this group has been building up and some are almost ready to move into the 100 metre group.

'Junior kid of the week', this week, from the 25metre class, is Ridge Mapperson. He has been really focused this week and doing his best.

Club membership is increasing and there are 16 new members, that is, kids who have never done swimming training before, with ages ranging from five to 13. Club registration is $40 covering affiliation and membership and giving them access to training programs, stroke correction, use club equipment, time trials, and club carnivals.

‘Kid of the week' this week is Alex Radakovic with outstanding improvements on his personal best lap times in several strokes.

Others who have done well in time trials this week are, Darcy Kidd, Peter Anderson and Sky and Brooke Holland.
