28 Mar, 2002 10:25 AM
Twenty four swimmers from the local swimming club competed in the club championship night on Friday.

Three competitors, Carly Kennedy, Patrick Small and Jordan Dowdle have qualified in the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association Swimming Championships and will be swimming their best at Homebush next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Carly Kennedy competing in the 11 year girls placed first in the 50 metre freestyle, backstroke and butterfly events, and first in the 100 metre freestyle, and 4 x 50 metre individual medley.

Meanwhile, Patrick Small, came first in his eight year boys 50 metre freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly events, and also won the 100 metre freestyle race as well as the 4 x 50 metre individual medley.

At the same time, nine-year-old Jordan Dowdle won his 50 metre freestyle, breast stroke, and butterfly events, as well as the 100 metre freestyle and 4 x 50 metre individual medley race.

Swimming club spokeswoman Ros Smith said the annual championships held at the end of every season, will be followed by a presentation night on Friday April 12 at the pool.

She said the competitors on Friday ranged from six year olds to 12 year olds.

"Many kids swam their personal best on Friday."

She said all the strokes of freestyle, breast stroke, backstroke, and butterfly in both 25 metre and 50 metre races were conducted.

She said there was also a 100 metre freestyle event and a 4 x 50 metre individual medley consisting of a lap of each of the four strokes.

Ms Smith said she was happy with the number of swimmers who competed on the day.

"The majority took on the challenge, and they all swam with confidence."

Ms Smith said she felt most of the kids had improved their stroke and technique throughout the season.

"We had one girl who could not swim very well when she started and now she can swim a 25 metre stroke confidently."

"There are also some swimmers who have stepped up from 25 metres to 50 metre strokes."

"One boy who has only joined since Christmas can now do all four strokes across 25 metres," she said.

Ms Smith said the junior relay team had previously competed in the State Championships.

"In the past four years we have always managed to qualify some of our swimmers."
