Lightning Ridge Central School students travelled to Bourke last week to compete in the Ronny Gibbs 7s Tournament for rugby league and netball.
They competed against schools from throughout the Far West region, including Bourke, Brewarrina, Wilcannia and Walgett.
In the football the Under 14 boys did very well and came a close second behind Bourke 1, going down by only 20 points to 16 in the final.
It was a tightly-fought game that was ultimately decided by a Bourke cut-out pass which put their winger in for a try in the corner.
Ronny Gibbs was highly impressed with the standard of play and said it is evident that there has been a lot of work done with the players from Walgett, Lightning Ridge and Bourke to boost the players' skills and fitness levels which is pleasing to see.
In the netball our girls also performed strongly, winning three of their four games.
The competition was so close that a count back was needed between Lightning Ridge and Walgett to see who would face Bourke in the final.
Lightning Ridge missed out by only one point and finished third in the competition, while Walgett went on to win.
