Primary students at Lightning Ridge Central School were given specialised training in rugby league last week from the Australian Rugby League Foundation.
Foundation development officer Paul Davis came to the school as part of a tour of several towns in the north west.
Mr Davis said the aim of the training was to get kids active at an early age.
"It's basically ball skills, basic movement skills and body awareness and all that sort of stuff.
"I choose to use rugby league because that's basically who I work for but balls skills are similar in cricket, netball - they're all just really similar ball skills really," he said.
"When I go into schools and do a program, we start with just the basic movement skills, then as the weeks go along we become more specific towards rugby league.
"But just with the one off sort of hit and miss visit, it's just basic balls skills and getting the kids active, which is the key to everything."
Mr Davis is based in Tamworth and is one of 34 development officers Australia-wide that go into schools to train students.
He is responsible for covering the north west area, but because of the size the Ridge had never had a visit from the foundation.
"There has been someone doing the job for four years, and I just sort of realised this far out west had never really had a visit or much development stuff done through the foundation, so I just thought I'd make it an annual sort of thing.
"I've done Coonabarabran, which is not too far, but then I've done Baradine, Coonamble, and then the Ridge," Mr Davis said.
"I'm based largely in primary schools, which is the focus of what we do, and am just venturing into high schools.
"If we get kids interested in rugby league, hopefully they'll sign up to play, that's the idea."
