The Lightning Ridge Central School held its annual school cross country carnival on Friday at the Spider Brown Oval.

Primary winners were: under 5 boy Jack Moran and girl Ellen Knight; under 6 boy Jayden Tremontanas and girl Jenaya Nagy; under 7 boy Dan Gawthorpe and girl Jessica Moran, under 8 boy Adam McNeice; under 9 boy Adam Bedenakov; under 10 boy Paul Brown and girl Marie Nagy; under 11 boy Ricky Weatherall and girl Kirsty Hughes; under 12 boy Stephen Kelly and girl Catherine Small.

In the secondary division, winners were: under 12 boy Andrew Turk and girl Shannan Campbell; under 13 boy Richard Sands and girl Elizabeth Small; under 14 boy Daniel Bolton and girl Kristina Kelly; under 15 boy Beau MacKenzie and girl Charm Morrison; under 16 boy Todd Lohse and girl Terri-Leigh Vermeer; under 17 girl Larissa Sands; under 18 and over boy Rick Harman and girl Amelia Maxwell.

The school's secondary sports co-ordinator, John Cobham, said the first four place getters in each age group for the primary division would go into the Barwon zone cross country trials to be held next week, on Friday, May 31.

He said students would be passing through the same course for this, which encompassed parts of the golf course and race track.

Mr Cobham said the secondary qualifiers would take on their zone trials in Wallahbadah on June 14.

He said Friday's carnival saw most students taking part in the set course.

"We had set distances for each age group, ranging from 2km for the infants who did a fun run, to 6km for the secondary students," he said.

He said the school had run the same course for the past couple of years, and it seemed to do well and be suitable.

"Everything fell into place on the day, we had good weather and also put on some novelty events between starting times for races for the students," Mr Cobham said.
