Strikers start new season

28 May, 2003 05:55 PM
The first games against Walgett were played last Saturday in the Ridge.

The Ridge Strikers played very well against the Walgett Wolves and although most games were close the Strikers did finish up winning more games overall.

The Under 5s and 6s played very well considering many players had not played another team before.

The Wolves scored the first goal but they didn't have the lead for long. The Strikers soon got even after a goal by Jack Moran. Liam Hughes then scored two more goals for the Strikers before the end of the first half.

Not long into the second half the Wolves almost scored but were stopped by a new Striker, Quin Brunner.

Ben McWilliams then scored again for the Ridge and the Wolves got in one last goal before full time. The final score was Strikers 4, Wolves 2, well done all you new players.

The Under 7s played a great game and Jayden Tramantanos played a particularly great game scoring four goals for the Strikers.

There was excellent goal keeping by Dominic Sisa, Declan Whitlow and Darcy Kidd. Ceejay Harrison scored one goal and showed great teamwork along with Samantha Harris, Alex Odri and Lincoln Costello. The final score was Strikers 5, Wolves 3.

The eight years were up against a particularly well known Walgett team.

The ones who were the hard to beat 7s last year are now the even harder to beat 8s this year.

Nevertheless the Strikers gave it their best with excellent teamwork and ball skills by Daniel Murray, Rhys Brown, Jessica Moran, Jake Turner, Angus Legg, and great goal keeping by Rourke Rose and Carlo Forner. The final score was Strikers 0, Wolves 8.

The Under 9s and 10s played three games beating Walgett 5-0 in the first game, 2-1 in the second and going down 0-1 in the third.

Lachlan Leicester played very well scoring three goals for the Strikers, with Matilda Nugent scoring two and Damian O'Keefe scoring two also.

The under 12s played one game, going down to Walgett 3-2, with goals scored by Zach Strasek and Jay Jackmore.

All players wishing to catch the Rooty Hill express to Walgett on Saturday need to fill out a permission note today. Cost is $6 and the bus leaves at 8:15am.

The Gunnedah carnival is on Sunday, June 8.
