Steely victors

02 May, 2002 09:39 AM
The four man team of Carl Huskinson, James and Ian Hegarty, and Joe Popovic took out the Mining and Steel four-person ambrose golf event on Saturday.

The winning team managed to score 63 scratch, 53.75 nett, marginally beating second placegetters, Ron and Kay Hogan, Pat McErlaine and Sally Williams who finished on 55.25 nett.

Brett Hyland, Felix Monch, Nigel Webb and Carmel Fiddling were third on 55.62.

Mining and Steel's owner Jim Leahy said the annual 18 hole event was well contested between the 11 teams.

He said seven visitors from Toukley, including himself and his wife had travelled to take part in the challenge.

"Today's (Saturday) competition was as good as last year's," he said.

This is the sixth year the event has been held, and Mr Leahy said it was the first time in his life that Brett Hyland had driven a ball over the water on the 14th hole.

"The course was fantastic, the weather was great, and it was better than last year, because we had to reschedule the event due to the storm," he said

He said 12-year-old James Hegarty showed a lot of promise in his style and technique on the day.

Mr Leahy, who together with his wife Di, and golf partners Les Wright and Barry Tolmie took out the Bradman Award with 59.75 nett, said all the Toukley players, including himself, enjoyed playing the Lightning Ridge golf course, the hospitality they received and had a good time.

"I think having a four-person ambrose is a great way for everyone to enjoy playing the game, because it is a team event as opposed to a single event, and makes for a great social match," he said

"Next year we'll be coming up to the Ridge to do it all over again."

Veterans golf

Eight veteran players turned up for the nine hole stroke event last Wednesday.

The winner was Reg Huntley with a score of 42 nett 35. Reg just managed to hold out Dave Schafer with his score of 14 nett 35.5.

Anzac Day golf

There were a total of 12 players taking advantage of the chance with a couple playing twice.

The winner with a great 26 points was the 'Beast from the Bowlo', young Tony Webb. Closest to Tony was Sally Williams with a neat 23 points.

Chook run

We only had a total of 25 players last Friday, probably due to the extra chook run Thursday and some of our normal players recovering from Anzac Day.

The winner with a very neat round was resident Kiwi Kath Johnston.

Kath didn't need to fly, she played so well on the ground and finished a clear winner from Adam Webb and Reg Huntley both on 23 points.

Chooks were won by all players with scores of 19 points and above.

The Black Opal Advocate encouragement award went to a fine player having a bad day. Joe Popovic could only manage 12 points which is very bad for Joe.

Par event

The sheet says it all as no one played Sunday's par event.

Seems like Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday is too much golf.

Collarenebri Mens Open tournament

Seven of our golfers made the trip to Colley on Sunday to bolster the figures and to attempt to bring home some trophies.

There were a total of 56 players at Colley from the home club, Lightning Ridge, Mungindi, Walgett, Dorego, Wee Waa, Moree, Narrabri and Warialda.

Five Ridge players won prizes with Pat Smith and Ron Canlin picking up the 18-hole four ball scratch runner-up prize.

Col Cooper and Adam Webb grabbed the nine hole second nine best Stableford prize with glee, and Dave Schafer took out the nearest to the pin with a mighty shot on the eight 17 hole.

The 18-hole four ball event was won by Mungindi pair P Prosser and A Brosnan.

This week

There will be a chook run all day tomorrow from 8am to 4pm.

On Saturday the NSW mixed four ball qualifying round will tee off at 12.30pm, and the third monthly medal and eclectic will be contested on Sunday starting at 8am.
