The Aristocrat Black Opal Classic concluded last Friday after a week of fierce bowls competition and true Aussie sportsmanship.
The classic attracted 128 bowlers from across the State, making up 32 teams which battled it out for the $10,000 prize.
After the quarter finals on Thursday afternoon it was down to the final four, with the surprise defeat of Aron Sheriff's side, last year's runners-up.
Friday morning saw Ross Maguire's side play the young Mark Shipman, and newcomer Jason Stokes was matched against Queenslander Jeff Dolan's side.
Maguire played well against Shipman's side but the young man scored a four on the 18th end and put an end to the Maguire's side. Stokes had a comfortable win against the Queensland side.
The competition came down to Jason Stokes, Neville Downes, David Brandt and Bob Dunn from Soldiers Point against Mark Shipman, Paul Gillon, Ian Mann and Glen Richardson from Kurri Kurri.
The final was held in hot and windy conditions on Friday afternoon, putting pressure on both teams.
The team from Soldiers Point took an early lead but a late comeback by Kurri Kurri saw the competition neck and neck during the late ends.
But at the 21st end Soldiers Point retained their lead and won the competition 19-16.
They were awarded the $10,000 first prize, while the runner-up received $4000.
Skip Jason Stokes said he had really enjoyed the week and paid tribute to his team members and the other bowlers in the competition.
"It's a pleasure to play with these guys, they're great bowlers. There's been great sportsmanship, it's been an enjoyment to play against the guys we played against.
He said he was surprised his team had done so well and thanked the Lightning Ridge Bowling Club for the effort they had put in.
"If you cover your expenses you've done well, and we've obviously done that by winning so that's good.
"It's the best tournament I've been to, they really look after the players. Peter Williams and the board should be commended, they did a good job."
The local team won the consolation event with Ross Baily from Taree and Kris Lehfelt from Tweed Heads coming equal third.
