The Far Western Academy of Sport (FWAS) visited Lightning Ridge Central School last Thursday to run a series of fitness tests, and to also spot some young emerging talent. The new FWAS executive officer Kathy Barber commented on how impressed she was with some of the talent shown. "They've got some talented boys here, and in the 40m sprint they have shown some impressive foot speed," she said. Ms Barber said it was not only the boys who showed great promise. "Young Kristina Kelly, who recently participated in the State League competition, performed to a very high standard consistently throughout the testing and shows great potential for the future of the program," she said. Sport science expert Jo Davis travelled with Kathy Barber for the testing and said it was all about finding the sport suited to the physical attributes of the students. "At the end of the testing they will get a certificate to tell them how suited they are to a particular sport. It will be ranked in terms of percentage," she said. Ms Davis said some students would often wonder why they were good at one particular sport and this program would help to answer this. "For example, let's say a student always does well in the javelin throw at the school athletics carnival, well this is to help answer that," she said. The FWAS said it found the athletes who undertook the testing to be exceptionally talented at all levels of testing and extremely keen to learn more about the programs of the FWAS.
