Local boy Stephen Raines who has been attending Knox Grammar School for his secondary education was this year selected as vice captain of the team that competed in the Australian Rugby Football Schools Union Novotel National Championships.

The 18 year-old was part of the NSW school boys rugby union team second 15th.

Stephen was first involved with the school boys representative team at the age of 16 and since then has been playing rugby union steadily in the combined associated schools competitions.

He also competed in the national championships two years ago, but this time managed to be awarded the Syd Sugerman Award for best team man at the championships held during the June/July school holidays.

His school team this year to date has been undefeated in the combined associated schools and greater public schools competitions.

Stephen's mother Elaine said her son was very surprised and awestruck to receive the award as well as being selected as vice captain of his team.
