Recognising fear and how it affects the mind

18 Jun, 2003 05:40 PM
Three things are constantly working within us, which cause discontent and restlessness in the mind: desire and craving; dislike or hate; and fear.

Fear is created as follows: from ignorance (non-desire to know yourself) and of what is truth, ego-sense arises; ego-sense is 'I', ‘me the first'.

The ‘I' creates division - likes and dislikes.

Likes lead to approval, dislikes lead to disapproval; our imagination and memories influence our approvals and disapprovals; from the ego's division of likes and dislikes fear is created.

Fear results from non-acceptance of the reality, of what it is.

If a person is content, he or she accepts what is and there is no fear.

Lack of self-awareness, egoism, grid, likes and dislikes and fear of death make the mind restless.

We should be content and happy with what we have, let life flow on and accept it.

Our mind should be like a lake - its natural state is to be calm and crystal clear.

There is no motion in the lake, any waves, ripples or currents.

Our thoughts, images and ideas are innumerable waves with which we identify ourselves.

As a result, our mind is agitated; our activity is restless, obscuring true nature of the mind, which is like blue sky without any cloud in it.

Meditation helps silence the mind. This silence brings contentment, peace, calmness, joy and higher awareness.
