PLAYERS SET SIGHTS ON SOCCER CARNIVAL

19 May, 2005 10:12 AM
Lightning Ridge Strikers travelled to Walgett on the weekend for the first games of the season.

It was a great day and players got in some valuable match practice in preparation for the carnival in Coonabarabran next Sunday.

The numbers were down in the under-14s and the extra players provided by the Walgett side were appreciated.

The team went down 9-4 in the first game with the first goals scored by Nathan from a goal kick by Luke.

Harley scored the second Strikers' goal with good passing among the halves and forwards.

The third goal, from a Luke clearance again, was scored by Locky and the fourth goal was scored by Locky from a direct penalty.

Thankyou to the Walgett players on both sides and we look forward to the next game.

The under-12s were also short a few players and borrowed four4 players from Walgett.

In the first quarter Walgett scored 3 goals to the Strikers 0.

The second quarter was very close with Walgett scoring 1 goal.

In the third quarter, Walgett scored two more goals, but LR also scored 2 goals! Geoffrey scored the two goals for LR in the third quarter.

It was a great effort from the under-6's as a shortage of players meant they backed up for two games.

The first game saw the under-6s match up against Walgett and they proved too strong in this game, running out victors 11-0.

Bella scored a host of goals showing some fine finishing skills, while Ben also scored some good goals.

In the second game the Ridge faced a tougher proposition in the Walgett under-7's and narrowly went down in 2-0.

This was a hard fought game and the Ridge players did themselves very proud with Zora Holz a standout.

Three Walgett players also helped out in the second game and played very well.

This Saturday is a home game with the Coonabarabran Carnival on Sunday .

Those travelling on the bus need to be down at the soccer fields at 4.45am and ready to leave by 5am.

The carnival kicks off at 9am.

Players must bring soccer shorts, socks and shin pads.

The club will provide jerseys.

The order has finally arrived with shin pads and shorts.

The socks didn't come...again.

Any players without socks please come to the canteen on Thursday or Saturday and we'll find some socks that fit from the old stock, which will do until the new stock comes.

On Saturday May 28, Walgett will be coming to Lightning Ridge to play and this will be the last day to pay registration fees.
