Players join academy side

19 May, 2004 09:19 PM
Seven players have been chosen from Lightning Ridge for the Far West Academy of Sport rugby league side.

The side includes 25 players and the Ridge selection is the highest amount of players the side has ever chosen from any one town.

Coach Charlie Brown said he was pleased so many of the boys made it to the team.

"It's really great, it's a big thing for these guys to get in," he said.

The players from Lightning Ridge are Todd Lohse, Richard Harrison, Doug Ivantic, Tynan Morris, David Kennedy, Nick Gibbs and Sean Herbert.

Other players in the side come from Walgett, Bourke, Coonamble, Nyngan, Cobar, Broken Hill and Menindee Lakes.

The boys travel to Warren on the weekend for a training camp and to play a trial match against the Central West's Group 11, which includes players from Bathurst, Lithgow and Mudgee.

They will also participate in a Sports Science Fitness testing process, run by the Sydney Academy of sport, which will test their speed, strength and flexibility.

Next month they will travel to Sydney to train with Parramatta's A grade side and play against its development side.

There were three trials held in Warren and Cobar for the team, and Mr Brown said the team pretty much culled itself.

"After the camps most of the guys know they can't handle the hard footy," he said.

The Far West Academy of Sport is run by the NSW Sport and Recreation Department which aims to help local communities develop and make the best use of their sporting resources.
