Plans to resurrect local basketball competition

11 Jul, 2002 09:05 AM
Community members interested in starting up a basketball competition in Lightning Ridge met recently at the sports centre.

About half a dozen people discussed ways of trying to get local people to play again after at least three years of no competition.

It was decided a registration day would be held to resurrect the competition.

One of the members present, Rhonda Ashby, said in the mid-1990s basketball was going strong in town, with 11 local teams and two teams from Walgett signed up at one stage.

However, while plans for a registration day had been put in place Ms Ashby said how teams would be formed would depend on how many people signed up at registration.

It is envisaged the basketball competition would have five players per side.

The organising body also has to determine how long the competition would run for.

The registration day - to be held on Saturday July 27 at the sports centre - would be run on a fun day format, with a barbecue lunch and 3-on-3 knockout social game to be played.

Ms Ashby said prizes and giveaways were being put up for grabs for the fun day, designed to attract more players to join.

The group of local organisers are looking for more interested people to attend their next meeting on Tuesday July 23 at 5pm at the sports centre to further discuss competition plans.
