Ovals on way to recovery

24 Feb, 2005 12:08 PM
The Lightning Ridge ovals are well on the way to recovery with twice the grass cover compared to the same time last year, Walgett Shire Council foreman Andrew Leeder said.

Mr Leeder said the grass on the fields had really started to grow back.

He said the football field was also showing great promise, now being 80 per cent covered.

"I'm going to try and work with the clubs as best I can," he said.

Mr Leeder also said the council was in the process of getting a larger pump which should allow for the grass to grow back faster.

He said that clubs could assist him in the maintenance of the fields by providing a roster of when they planned to use the ovals.

Kelly Gould from the Lightning Ridge Soccer Club said the club would work with the foreman for the long-term preservation of the fields.

"I remember what the field has looked like in past years and its gradual degradation so we have to look to the long term and assist council in looking after these fields," she said.

The soccer club will hold its AGM this Saturday at Nobbies at 1pm and encourages everyone with an interest in joining or helping out with the soccer club to come along.

There are high hopes for the season ahead with things set to start mid to late march.

Training will be from 3pm to 4:30pm on a Thursday with Saturday morning games.

The club also has the option of travelling to five soccer carnivals this year.
