Junior netballers will come together for the third time today in preparation for the Ricky Walford Shield to be held in Walgett on Wednesday.
Ten girls have already been chosen by their coach Sandra Scott to represent Lightning Ridge in the annual competition.
Netball coaching assistant Rhonda Walford said in the past the Lightning Ridge side had done well in the shield competition.
"We've been able to get through at least three games each year, we have even made it through the semi-finals and finals in the past.
"But we always seem to get knocked out in the grand final, hopefully though we can take out the shield this year," she said.
Ms Walford said the juniors had been going strong this season, with 20 netballers signed up for the regular Saturday morning competitions.
She said they were into their 10th week of competition with the season expected to go for another month.
Last Saturday's score saw the Reds defeat Black 15-6.
Ms Walford said while junior netball was a sport that had been going strong for the past four years in Lightning Ridge, the interest had dropped off in the visiting towns of Goodooga, Walgett and Collarenebri a couple of years ago.
"It (inter-town competitions) just stopped happening, possibly because of a lack of interest and lack of coaches willing to take the players to the other towns."
Lightning Ridge also had a group of sub-junior members, aged five and under who partake in weekly training sessions to practise their ball skills with the coach.
"The kids have really developed throughout the season."
