Narrow win for Bodell at carnival

27 Jun, 2002 09:21 AM
School house Bodell came out on top after the primary athletics and secondary athletics carnivals were held on Thursday and Friday.

For a combined result of 1203, they only marginally defeated Reece on 1192, followed by Bruce on 1166.

In the secondary carnival Bodell had also secured the win with 503 points, followed by Reece on 478, and Bruce on 430, but for the primary event, Bruce topped the day winning with 736 points, to Reece's 714, and Bodell's 700.

Primary champions are: Simone Weatherall - junior girl champion, Kirsty Hughes - 11 year girl champion, Jessica Mullington - senior girl champion, Jai Jackman - junior boy champion, Ricky Weatherall - 11 boy champion, and Trent Ilpola - senior boy champion.

In the secondary athletics carnival, champions are: Shari Gibbs - 12/13 girls champion, Kristina Kelly - 14/15 girls champion, Terri-Leigh Vermeer - 16 and open girls champion, Raymond Harrison - 12/13 boys champion, Beau McKenzie - 14/15 boys champion, and John Lane - 16 and open boys champion.

Lightning Ridge Central School sports co-ordinator, John Cobham, said both athletics carnivals included all the track and field events.

He said the students who participated ran various distances ranging from the 100-metre sprint to 800-metre long distance run.

He said the field events included shot-put, discus throwing, high jump and long jump, as well as javelin throwing but this was only included in the secondary carnival.

Mr Cobham said the primary students really got into the spirit of athletics and showed high participation rates as well as a lot of enthusiasm.

He said this was the first year the school had put the student track and field records on a computer database, so that in the future best time records could be competed against and compared with.

Mr Cobham said the school wanted to thank the high parental support during the carnivals.

He said all first place and second placegetters in each event would qualify to go onto the zone athletic carnivals.

Mr Cobham said the secondary qualifiers had been preparing for the Castlereagh Zone Athletics Carnival to be held in Coonamble tomorrow, with about 35 students from the school competing.

He said students had been practising their athletics skills during physical education classes, and applauded the champions on their high participation in all events.
