LEAPIN' LENNY NO MATCH FOR CLANCY

14 Apr, 2004 05:32 PM
It was a day of bull riding, bronc riding and calf roping at the annual Lightning Ridge Black Opal Rodeo held last Sunday at the Bill Waterford Equestrian Centre.

The last bull rider of the night edged out the competition and claimed first place by two points in the open bull ride.

Eighteen-year-old Clancy Butler from Willow Tree in the Hunter Valley managed to stay on his bull for the required eight seconds with flair and agility.

Mr Butler said he didn't think he would win because he had been on Leapin' Lenny before.

"I've been on that bull a couple of times and he has always bucked me off," he said.

Mr Butler is a fencer by trade and said he had been bull riding as long as he can remember.

Rodeo entries were up 25 per cent from last year with high quality contenders competing in each event.

The events were team roping, calf roping, saddle bronc, ladies breakaway, steer wrestling, and of course bull riding.

The day ran smoothly apart from one competitor who was injured during the bronc riding and was taken away by the ambulance team at the grounds.
