League squad wins at Parkes

24 Feb, 2005 12:07 PM
The Far West Academy of Sport Rugby League Squad was victorious in its match at Parkes on Saturday.

Lightning Ridge was well represented in the team with six players and another from Goodooga.

The side contained Nicholas Gibbs, Damien Carter, Greg Young, Raymond Harrison, Chris Walford and Steven "Bubblo" from the Ridge and Kyle Cochran from Goodooga.

The side won 10-4 in a low scoring match against the Western Academy.

Lightning Ridge Rugby League Club president and Far West Academy coach Scott McMillan said he was very impressed with the efforts of the side.

He said the towns that the academy services were so remote they only have a select few of about 40 players that apply to play.

The side draws its squad members from Lightning Ridge, Walgett, Cobar, Nyngan, Bourke, Wilcannia, Broken Hill and Warren.

This is in contrast to the Western Academy side which has about 700 players to draw from including big regional centres like Dubbo.

Mr McMillan said the side would play its next game at the South West Sydney Academy of Sports Second Annual Rugby League Invitational Challenge in Campbelltown in March.

The games will be against sides from the Parramatta Eels and Sydney City Roosters.

He said the players were eagerly awaiting these encounters, which provide a good opportunity for players from remote regions to show their skill on a big stage.

Head Coach Col Wright said the squad was a valuable stepping stone for athletes who were keen to take their rugby league interest further.

"It is important for the athletes to experience playing rugby league in front of a large and sometimes vocal crowd," he said.
