The sporting talent of local Lightning Ridge boy Thomas Alchin was recognised recently when he was selected to play in the Barwon under 11 Rugby League side.
Ten-year-old Thomas made the side after competing in trials at Walgett last month.
Thomas is passionate about rugby league, and according to his father, Dean Alchin, he breathes league day and night.
"He's right into it, he kicks the footy round every morning and afternoons. If its not one thing with the footy its another. Hopefully he'll finish off the year in a big way," he said.
He began playing league at four years old and now plays with the Lightning Ridge Tigers under 12s team.
Thomas gained selection in the North West Zone PSSA Rugby League under 11s team as lock after travelling to Inverell earlier in the month.
He played in a selection trial in Inverell in the following week and was named in the North West Division, the highest selection possible. The final State showdown will be held in Tweed Heads early next month.
Last weekend Thomas played a warm-up game for the State against Tamworth District and his team won 36-0, with nine tries to nil.
He plays another trial game at Coonabarabran against the Western Division, which is the final game before the main event in Tweed Heads.
Thomas has also gained selection for the Balonne/Barwon Rugby League team to play at the Queensland State Carnival in Chincilla next month in the under 12s under 43kg division.
