Kids surf the coast at clinic

18 Apr, 2002 11:33 AM
Six Lightning Ridge students aged 15 to 17 caught a wave in the 'Wave from the West' surf clinic organised by the Department of Sport and Recreation.

Spokesperson Rhonda Ashby said the clinic was part of the three-week SurFest at Newcastle Beach.

She said the one-day clinic was also a part of the Billabong Indigenous Surf Classic which was now in its third year.

"The kids really took foward to it," Ms Ashby said.

"Three of them were surfing by the end of the day.

"It was a 10-hour trip to get down there (Newcastle), we travelled the furthest, but the kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

"Hopefully, we'll go down again next year."

The local students were able to meet some professional indigenous surfers and role models.

"They (students) participated in learn-to-surf lessons and watched the Indigenous Surf Classic take place," Ms Ashby said.

"Who knows, one day we might have one of our own kids participate in the Classic?"

The Surf Classic was officially opened with a traditional smoking ceremony conducted by Awabakal elders who also gave a formal welcome.

More than 35 students from Lightning Ridge, Coonamble, Condobolin and Dubbo took part in the clinic.

"The kids behaved themselves and were great to have at the clinic, they always did what they were asked," she said.

Ms Ashby said while the group was at Newcastle she met a Billabong representative who said the clothing company would be willing to sponsor the Lightning Ridge community in an upcoming sporting event.

This was the first year the Ridge had participated in the surf clinic, but it was hoped to keep it as an ongoing event for years to come.
