Jumping popular at two-day camp

12 Sep, 2002 09:07 AM
A two-day pony camp was held last weekend in Lightning Ridge attracting 10 riders from the surrounding district.

Pony club secretary and instructor Debbie Tribe said the riders aged from four to 11 took part in bending and flag races on Saturday as well as duel barrel races, jumping exercises playing red rover and flatwork.

"They all like red rover the best, it was one of our novelty events.

"On Sunday we pulled out our stop-watches to get the riders to compete against their own times."

"We wanted them to race against themselves so they could compare their times."

Mrs Tribe said the second day finished with an egg and spoon race.

"This provides the riders with a fun way of learning to hold their body still.

"It teaches control of their own body, balance and control of the horse, all the while concentrating on the egg," she said.

Mrs Tribe said during the weekend all riders had progressed tremendously.

"They were all very keen and interested."

She said they enjoyed jumping the most but the hardest exercise was the flatwork because precision was needed to get the circles and pattern required correct.

"They had a bit of difficulty getting their figure-eights together, but they did well in the end, I was most impressed.

Mrs Tribe said the pony club had attracted some new members this year, with 28 adults and juniors currently registered.

"Our youngest member is Madison Gough who is only four and joined this year."

She said the club was also hopeful it would get two new instructors soon to assist and work with their current two instructors.

"It will help us expand the club and allow for more time to be spent helping each individual child, because the riders can then be split up into smaller groups," Mrs Tribe said.

On Saturday next week, there will be a one-day pony club instruction day, and during the school holidays local children will be attending a week-long camp at Dirranbandi, Wee Waa, Collarenebri, Walgett and Nindigully.
