Unbelievable. Another week of no golf until Friday (maybe) as it is very overcast again as I write this.
We have complained about no rain for so long it seems strange that we could feel we have had enough but that is the case. With the cooler weather the water does not dry off the course, therefore it only takes a little for us to lose three or four days waiting for the course to dry out.
Friday chook run
Only 23 players for the chase last week. Just a bit damp out there which made things a bit difficult in places.
The winner with a neat 22 points across the nine holes was Brett Hyland, well done mate. The best of the chasers was Adam Webb with 20 points.
The Black Opal Advocate Encouragement Award went to Kath Johnston on a mighty seven points.
Chooks to: Adam Webb, Carmel Fiddling, Gary Hughes, Felix Monch, John Mackay, Ron Canlin, Wendy Barrett and in a three-way count back Jan Davis picked up the last chook.
Hospital Charity Day
We had 41 players arrive for the Hospital/Diabetes Charity Day at the club on Saturday afternoon. It was a good turnout appreciated by the hospital group led by Lorraine, 'Mello' and Zoe.
A big thank you to all those players who came out and enjoyed a fantastic day with a great game of golf and food prepared by the hospital kitchen staff, which was absolutely the best. Thanks to everyone who was involved with the preparation and organising of the day, you all excelled yourselves. Eddie Webb did his usual fine job of barman and run-about.
The game was across the nine hole course for the trophies but an additional three fun holes were thrown in with the devious mind of Col selecting the type of play on the holes such as hitting off a chair on the 10th hole, then having to throw a tennis ball off the tee on the 11th, to putting out with ping-pong balls on the 12th hole. It was a super day and I only hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did.
A special thanks to my partners for a great time, Rochelle, Wendy and John.
With 10 teams playing we had enough prizes for all so no one was going to miss out.
All teams were four-person teams with the exception of the Jakitsch team, which had five.
Results: first - Murray Turner team; second - Val Boardman team; third - Jan Davis team; fourth - Ron Hogan team; fifth - Col Cooper team; sixth - Sepp Jakitsch team; seventh - John Kimber team; eighth - Bruce Ceming team; ninth - Stacey Reynolds team; 10th - Carmel Fiddling team (Bradman's); nearest to the pin - Murray Turner team; long drive ladies - Jan Davis team (thanks to Kath Johnston); and long drive men's - Col Cooper team (via lucky Col).
Saturday night was the karaoke night with mister music Vaughan Bell and his magic machines.
About 40 odd would bes, could bes and should bes braved the microphone to bring the crowd to their feet. A particular favourite on the night was Joy Webb Miss Karaoke 2003; Joy really brought the music to life as along with Murray Turner she belted out all the old favourites.
Col stepped up to the mark and we now know he sings as well as he plays golf but he did have fun. Dave Randall crooned a few songs along with many other great stars of Lightning Ridge.
Thanks to Dave and Sandra for coming out and bringing Sandra's sister and a friend from Port Macquarie made one old fella's night very special, great to have all the visitors attend the night.
Thank you to Lorraine, Zoe, ‘Mello', Stacey, Eddie, Helen and Joe Popovic who was the popular chef for the barbecue after the golf and before the night's entertainment.
A great job Joe.
Thank you to Vaughan who donated his time and equipment for the charity night; you're a beauty mate.
I can only thank everyone for supporting the day and say the only ones to miss out on a fantastic day were those who stayed home.
A special thank you to Dick Smith Foods who sponsored the day providing the food and all the prizes.
Also thanks to Khans IGA Supermarket, the Lightning Ridge Hotel Motel, Supersave and the RSL sub-branch who all provided extra trophies.
Tropy visit Sunday
Sunday saw the members of the Lightning Ridge Tropy Bowls arrive at the golf club for a bonding session and a few games.
This was the tropy reunion gang so it was the oldies versus the youngies. Debateable when you look at some of the players.
The few holes of golf that were played saw the worst examples of sledging seen on the golf course in many a year.
Poor old Tiger Woods would have thrown his clubs in the nearest dam if the spectators did to him what the players did to each other.
Many thanks to Geoff and his organisers for a great day and I think the visiting trops all had a ball and will return for the 18th reunion after a weekend of total relaxation and fun.
This week
There will be a chook run all day tomorrow with the last hit off at 3:30pm.
Saturday's event is still to be determined so check with the club, and on Sunday the Men's Foursomes Championships across 27 holes will be played.
Keep swinging sweetly,
Lightning Ridge Golf Club
