Hardhats command pitch to claim win

28 Apr, 2005 09:02 AM
It was bush cricket at its best on Saturday as the annual Mine Field Shield saw the reunion of old mates from as far away as South Australia in what turned out to be a commanding victory to the Hardhats.

The Hardhats faced up against the Shincrackers in a grudge match which had family members playing off against one another.

A good crowd came out in support of the Golf Club and UHA and they were not disappointed, with the game always producing plenty of excitement.

Players could be penalised for missing catches, hitting a seagull (cardboard stands littered around the oval) or various other predetermined mistakes.

Some excellent catches were taken while many missed opportunities were also witnessed.

Controversy hit midway through the Shincrackers' innings as their captain Brian King questioned umpire Lawrence Walford over how many Hardhat players were on the field.

It became obvious the match stakes were high and a year's bragging rights was on the offing.

Shincrackers captain Brian King was gracious in defeat and congratulated the Hardhats.

"It just wasn't our day today," he said.

However Mr King made clear the Shincrackers would not be going away and the Hardhats could expect a team hungry for victory next year.

"We'll be back, better than ever next year," he said.

The cricket was not always the main focus with Dee Black, Tracy Harrison and Ruth Scanlan taking out the banner competition with a great design.

Despite the commanding victory by the Hardhats the day was more about the reunion of friends and now in its 10th year, it has become an important event on the Ridge calendar.
