Gymnasts prepare for exams

11 Jul, 2002 09:06 AM
Talitha Sweatman, Leonie Gawthorpe and Stephanie Stone are three of a class of 30 girls who are preparing for their gymnastics exam on Monday.

Instructor Leanne Sweatman said the girls ranged from the ages of 6 to 14, and were going for either state or national level exams.

"The routines with the hoop are part of state level 1, but there are also other exams being held in freehand, ball, ribbon and club sequences," Ms Sweatman said.

"The girls will be required to perform their standing skills as well as the routines in front of state, national, and international judge Edith Peluso during August 29 to 31.

"Most of the kids doing this exam are first-year gymnasts, but last year's students passed it with brilliant results."

Ms Sweatman said the previous students would be sitting higher-level exams during the same three days in August.

She said the beauty of doing rhythmic gymnastics was that it improved co-ordination, posture, musicality, and presentation and helped develop self-confidence.

"It is a sport kids can succeed in and that seniors can do as well, because it only places a low impact strain on the body, and students can learn at their own pace," she said.

Ms Sweatman said the equipment that needed to be purchased to learn rhythmic gymnastics was not expensive, easily transportable and allowed kids to practise at home.

"Everyone in the girls beginners class have picked up their co-ordination, and some kids are moving in sync now," she said.

"It has progressed their flexibility and strength."
