Girls right on the rhythm

05 Sep, 2002 11:24 AM
More than half of the nearly 20 girls that underwent their exams during a three-day assessment weekend received highly commended achievements for their performances.

Well renowned Sydney instructor Edith Puluso came to the Ridge to conduct the assessments and also carried out a few workshops in rhythmic gymnastics.

Lightning Ridge Gymnastics Club instructor Leanne Sweatman said 19 exams were held for the children aged between eight and 15.

She said all the children had done well, with many pulling off their personal best.

"Elli and Ashley Callaghan, Stephanie Stone and Leonie Gawthorpe all received commendations of excellence in their technique."

"Kathryn Brogan shone, she not only had excellent flexibility but was also highly commended for her sportsmanship."

Mrs Sweatman said judge Edith Puluso was impressed with the potential of Jodie Davison, Britney McConvel, Katarina Deisenberg and Tiana Brewer.

She said Jessica Gawthorpe was also commended for her graceful movements potential.

"Martika Simeon was also commended for showing an extremely good sense of rhythm, while Bobbie Leicester and Samantha Brown showed incredible strength in their movements.

She said at the same time two of the club's younger gymnasts, Talitha Sweatman aged six, and Sam Mears aged seven showed a lot of talent.

Mrs Sweatman said for their exams the girls had to perform a free-hand routine, and skills using clubs, hoops, ball, rope and ribbon.

"Depending on each individual childs skill level, they all had to demonstrate a certain standard of competence to master the required routine."

Mrs Sweatman said Edith determined the six skills that needed to be performed using apparatus.

She said a judging course for parents was held on the first day of assessments designed for coaches where eight people took part.

"We had to pass a written test and three practical exams assessing the kids with their execution, composition and artistic value of their performances."

All eight coaches have progressed to the next stage of assessments.

Mrs Sweatman said a few workshops in between exams were also conducted by Edith to help the girls get their fine skills tuned using all types of apparatus.

The girls are awaiting their results expected within the next few weeks.
