Secondary female students from the Lightning Ridge Central School are in the process of forming a netball squad to compete in the Combined Highschool Sports state knockout competition.
Two of the players who tried out for the squad and were in the Castlereagh team who played in the northwest netball trial squad, Amelia Maxwell and Cassie Skuthorpe, said they had been training for the past few weeks on Thursday afternoon's for the annually selected school netball squad team.
The pair said in previous years their teams had proven to be strong.
Maxwell said the highschool team had once before made it to the semi-finals.
The two players said two competitions would take place, one for the Year 7 to Year 10 students, and another for the open age group.
Maxwell and Skuthorpe said the school team, to be selected towards the end of this month, would take part in the inter-town competition.
The pair said around 15 players turned up at their first training session at the beginning of this month.
"It was quite a good turnout," Maxwell said.
"I think many of the girls decided they were going to put the effort in, because they realised now that if they don't come to training they probably wouldn't get picked to go on the team," Maxwell said.
The pair said the team would come up against Warialda or Moree at the end of this month for their first game.
"If we win we'll go on to play the winner of the next round," Maxwell said.
She said the girls had been training well as a team.
"I think the team will come together good with a bit more practise, but most of us have played together before, so it shouldn't be too hard," she said.
