The 2005 netball season came to an end on Saturday with the final gala day, held in Walgett.
The event was moved from Goodooga because of last week's rain and officials had to sweep water off the courts before play could begin, but the day eventually went ahead without a hitch.
Lightning Ridge fielded three sides in the competition, two in the Under 13s and one in the Opens.
In the Under 13s both teams performed well, each winning three of their five games.
When the teams came up against each other it was Lightning Ridge 1 which proved to be the stronger, defeating Lightning Ridge 2 by 5 points to 1.
Ultimately, though it was Walgett 2 which took out first place after defeating Goodooga in the final by five points to four.
In the Open Competition the Lightning Ridge girls had more success and fought their way through to the final by winning two of their three games.
However, it was Walgett who dominated the competition and after going through undefeated they beat Lighting Ridge in the final by 7 points to 1.
Project officer Angela Crisp said the event was a great success and highly beneficial for all the girls involved.
"It provides an opportunity for the girls to meet people from other towns and gives them experiences they normally can't access,'' she said.
"You can definitely see an improvement in the girls since we started in May."
The first year of holding these events has been very successful and there are plans to expand it further next year, with the possibility of two regional competitions that combine for regular carnivals.
Miss Crisp wanted to thank all the volunteers who have made 2005 such a successful season.
"They're all very important and highly valued. These carnivals simply don't function without them,'' she said.
