First win comes in final game

01 Aug, 2002 09:22 AM
Lightning Ridge Redbacks played their last game for the season on Sunday afternoon against the Yetta Tigers and scored their first win.

Although the Tigers were ranked as one of the top three teams in the Barwon-Darling Rugby League Competition and the Redbacks were on the bottom of the rung, a victory was still secured, which saw the Redbacks walk off the field at the end of the match 26-22.

Redbacks' player Danny Kapatos said the Ridge had scored more tries than the Tigers but missed a few of the conversions.

"It was a close game with only a four point gap," he said.

Kapatos said team kicker Anthony McBride failed a few conversions up front.

However he said the game flowed well.

"We didn't really pick up the pace or slow right down at any stage and there weren't too many penalties, even though it was a hot day."

Kapatos said some of the Yetta Tigers had also joined forces with the Lightning Ridge Redbacks, who were a few players short.

"The Tigers players on our team really helped play because they made the numbers up to 12 players."

However Kapatos said while this meant they were still one player short, they had been more than one player down in most previous games.

He said this was the first time during the season the Redbacks had come up against the Tigers.

"We managed to pull off the win somehow, so that was good."

Kapatos said Redbacks player Simon Morgan tackled well during their final match of the season, while impact player Peter Borkovic came on to make a lot of yards in the forwards.

He said Mark Morris and Joseph Vrtacnick both produced good tries and team coach Wayne Kennedy refereed his first A grade match on Sunday.

But Kapatos said to the Redbacks it didn't really matter whether they'd win or lose a game throughout the season, the team would always have a drink afterwards.
