Visitors will receive instruction on the safe handling of pistols and be allowed to shoot a variety of different types of pistols in a closely supervised situation.

The cost is $10, which covers the use of the pistols, ammunition and a barbecue lunch.

Pistol shooting is a long-established Olympic sport.

Seven different matches are shot at the club and these include all of those shot at both Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

Some of these matches are slow and require sustained concentration by the top shooters, while others are fast and replicate more practical situations.

Bob Smith, from the Pistol Club, said pistol shooting is a sport which can be enjoyed at any level of fitness.

For the past 27 years the club has conducted a shoot in June which is attended by competitors who travel from all over the country to participate.

The sport develops hand-eye coordination and at the elite level requires great mental concentration.

Members of the club use a variety of pistols in these matches, ranging from air pistols to .22 semi automatics and centre-fire revolvers.

Some of the members also shoot reproduction black powder muzzle loading pistols.

Due to stringent safety precautions, pistol shooting is one of the safest sports.

The event begins at 10am on Sunday and participants are asked to wear proper shoes or boots and bring sunglasses or protective glasses, as well as ear muffs if available.

Minors between 12 and 18 years must be accompanied by an adult.
