David wins shield with neat round

10 Oct, 2002 10:46 AM
There were 11 women who arrived for the 18 hole stableford in the afternoon.

The winner with a pretty neat round of golf was Jan Davis who compiled a great 39 points to ensure her handicap wouldn't change but could win on the day. Winsome O'Brien made sure Jan didn't get too carried away as she chased hard to finish on 38 points.

The balls went to Sally Williams on 36 points and to Stacey Reynolds and Carmel Fiddling on 31 points, Jan Jakitsch was the unlucky player in the three-way count back for two balls on 31 points.

Veterans Wednesday

It was really good to see 11 of the older generation hitting off in the veterans' 12 hole competition.

The winner on the day with a fine 27 points was the little legend John Mackay, well done John. The runner-up three points behind was Wolf Moosmueller on 24 points.

The balls went to Reg Huntley and Ron Canlin, both the boys on 23 points.

Friday chook run

A good turnout of 32 players to chase the chicken dinner last week, must be all running out of cold chicken pieces for Sundays.

Pat McErlain was the one to catch as he proceeded to compile a mighty 27 points during his great round. He was going to be very hard to catch although no one gave up with some good scores during the later part of the day. Mick Smith, Brett Hyland both scored 24 points with Tony Huskinson scoring a great 25 points but all left the young fella out there by himself.

Chooks were given out down to 21 points where in a seven-way count back for six chooks Robina Boardman missed out, hard luck Robina that last hole did it.

The Black Opal Advocate Encouragement Award went to Ron Canlin with his mighty nine points.

Saturday first round Opal Shield

We saw a great crowd of 22 players hit off in the first round on the day at 12.30pm.

The actual finish on Saturday saw John Mackay play a great game to finish on 43 points which gave him the top score for the day just two points ahead of Ron Hogan who with a steady round pulled in 41 points.

Sunday second round Opal Shield

We had 21 players for the second round on the day with six dropping out and a new five arriving to play Sunday's competition.

Sunday saw the winner with the same score as for Saturday with Malcolm carpenter scoring 43 points for the day. Malcolm has been playing very consistent golf during the past five or six weeks, which was going to make him hard to beat on the day. Felix Monch tried his hardest to catch Mal but fell short by just the one stroke and finished on 42 points.

Opal Festival Shield

The shield winner was decided across the total stableford score for the two days, so it meant about 11 players were not eligible for the top prize. The scores showed how close the competition was with Jan Davis scoring 33/40 with a total of 73, then John Mackay 43/31 for a total of 74. With three players on 75, Sally Williams 33/42, Ron Hogan 41/34 and Wolf Moosmueller 36/39. The gang could not hold off Dave Schafer who finished with 36/40 for a total of 76 points to take out the winner's trophy. Well done Dave.

This week

There will be a chook run all day tomorrow with the last hit off at 3.30pm. On Saturday a 12 hole social par event is being held and all social golfers are welcome. The final monthly medal for the year will hit off at 9am on Sunday.
