The Lightning Ridge Junior Soccer Club coaching course on the weekend was well attended with 15 candidates attempting their junior licence.
Richard Evans from Orange ran an excellent course, teaching the group the basic rules of 'Roo Ball' (junior soccer) and various coaching skills and techniques.
He explained the training requirements of junior players, understanding their physical development and learning processes, and taught the group how to organise games.
The candidates enjoyed the active participation sections of the course, finding out just how fit they were, with balls flying in all directions.
The benefits from this course will flow down through the club for a long time and we are very fortunate to have this course provided free from the Department of Sport and Recreation.
The weekend provided the new coaches with a good deal of knowledge of the game and gave them insight into the important role coaches' play in the lives of many kids.
On a different note Richard Evans made it known that he was quite shocked and appalled at the state of our fields.
He was surprised that so many children used these fields and yet there seems to be no apparent solution to the problem.
One of the fields is almost completely sand now and it is very difficult to play on.
Thank you to all the parents who helped out on Saturday especially Rick and Chris who took on the coaching role.
This Saturday Walgett is coming to the Ridge for the first inter-club game of the season, and there may be one team going across to Coonabarabran on Sunday.
