 Clinic boosts swim skills

Clinic boosts swim skills

28 Nov, 2002 10:06 AM
NSW Swimming and the Department of Sport and Recreation held a two-day swimming clinic on Monday and Tuesday.

The first day was an education session for local swimming club officials where any questions they had were answered.

NSW Swimming coach Peter Freney said because Lightning Ridge was a long way from Sydney and any club support, the idea of the education session was to keep local officials up to date with what was happening in swimming clubs across the State.

"We tried to solve their queries on how to run things and were all able to just sit down and talk."

Mr Freney said the most common ly asked question by officials related to how to run club nights and how other clubs ran theirs.

"They (local club) seem to be on track and what they are doing is fine."

The second day of the clinic was on stroke development to provide swimmers with further education and access to high development coaches.

"We hoped to broaden the channels between the club and NSW Swimming."

The clinic was held for children aged from four to 14 and development officer Craig Oliver said their swimming standard was surprisingly good for a club that was in a remote area of NSW, as there is limited access to development in the Ridge.

"Some kids really progressed and if they train hard I believe they would be able to go a lot further.

"They were all very co-operative and well behaved," he said.

The two staff from NSW Swimming said they hoped to keep the program going with the department on an annual basis.
