The Lightning Ridge Pistol Club will be holding an open day on Saturday starting at 10:30am.
The club has been granted a special permit from the Firearms Registry to do this. These permits have only recently been available and allow non-licenced shooters to participate under strict supervision. This gives interested people the opportunity to try the sport before they join a club.
Eight different types of matches are shot at the club and club members will demonstrate all of these with a range set up for each match.
These are rapid fire pistol, free pistol and air pistol, which are shot both at the Olympics and Commonwealth games, and centrefire pistol, which is shot at the Commonwealth Games.
The match called blackpowder uses reproduction pistols current around 1850 before the introduction of brass cartridges.
Practical pistol involves shooting on a differently designed course for each match using large calibre pistols and service pistol is a match designed mainly for centrefire revolvers.
The special permit has certain conditions. A parent must accompany any minor. All those who attend will need proper identification such as a photo licence.
Safety is always of prime importance at the club and the sport of pistol shooting has an excellent safety record because of the close and constant supervision given to any person who wishes to participate.
If you want to come along you will need proper identification, eye protection (sunglasses will do), ear muffs (disposable ear plugs will be available), and proper shoes should be worn (no thongs).
