CDEP takes out touch grand final

30 Jun, 2005 09:51 AM
After two weeks of postponement due to rain the Lightning Ridge Bluelight Touch Football competition had its grand final last Wednesday night in freezing conditions.

The match was not without incident, with the lights going out midway through the first half and then to everyone's relief, coming back on.

The match between the Allstars and the CDEP was a tightly- fought contest with the sides trading tries in the early stages of the match. However the CDEP were able to pounce on some handling errors by the Allstars and skip away to a handy lead.

Try-scoring machine, Danny Seaton scored a length-of-the-field try and some good ball movement saw the CPED go to half-time looking the better side.

The Allstars hit back in the second half with a double to Ricky Weatherall, and with the score at 4-3, it was looking like anyone's game.

In response the CDEP regrouped and in the end were comfortable winners 6-3.

At the presentation Danny Seaton was awarded top tryscorer for the competition with Jackson Tooth taking out best and fairest.

The 16-week competition proved to be a real success for the Lightning Ridge Bluelight who raised $4000 to be put back into the local community.

Lightning Ridge Bluelight spokesperson Lawrence Walford said the competition was fanastic for the town, not only for the money raised but also because it brought the community together.

"This is what the Bluelight is about, getting the kids off the street and involved in fun activities," he said.

Mr Walford said the competition had proven really popular and would not have been possible without all the volunteer support.

Lightning Ridge Bluelight would like to thank the following people for all the help throughout the season; Carol Crawford, Trish Vermeer, Terry-Leigh Vermeer, Kelly Crosby, Mel Tooth, Col Cooper, Tynan Morris, Chris Walford, Stacey Morris, Kieran Walford, David Lollback and the Lightning Ridge Bluelight Committee.

The sponsors of the competition were Zita's Videos, Skells Ice, Noel Burke, Khans, and the Lightning Ridge Bowling Club.

The Lightning Ridge Bluelight Committee said the feedback from players and supporters had been really positive and would be looking to run another competition in the not too distant future.
