Junior Rugby League had a great year in 2004 and promises to be even more successful in 2005.
In our first year in the Balonne/Barwon Cup we had four children make the group side in the Under 35 kilo for the Balonne/Barwon. They came third in the carnival that was held in St George.
The Under 43 kilos representative team also placed third in their carnival with three members from that team from Lightning Ridge made the Queensland country side that defeated Queensland city at the end of the tournament.
Throughout the year we had a good showing in all age groups, making the grand final in two age groups, the Under 12s and 14s with the under 14s getting the win in their grand final in our first year in the Balonne/Barwon Cup.
Our combined Lightning Ridge and Goodooga sides took out the Ricky Walford Shield in at Walgett for the first time in 14 years of the competition "Primary School Side."
At the end of our season we were invited to take an Under 14s team to the Brisbane Broncos super 95 tournament where we also placed third out of 12 teams, only losing one game in the tournament.
On March 12 and 13we will be holding a super 9s tournament in Lightning Ridge. The Saturday will be the Under 12s tournament and the Sunday will be an Under 14s day. There will be teams from Roma, Chardiville, Chincilla, Westerndown, St George, Walgett and Moree. The tournament is in memory of Albert Walford. There will be prize money in the order of a $500 gift voucher and trophies for both age groups.
On April 29 and 30 we will be holding a training session and group match for the Queensland Junior Mustangs in Lightning Ridge. We will probably have a good chance of getting five to six players in the Junior Mustangs squad.
