The winner was legend John Mackay who scored a mighty 27 points. John just held out the runner-up Val Boardman.
Friday chook run
Thirty five players hit the course last week, which was understandable with the club championships that started on Saturday.
The winner was Mark Morris with a super 28 points although his chook run handicap hasn't got down to where his normal handicap is.
Runners-up with equal scores were Chris Morris and John Mackay with 26 points.
The Black Opal Advocate Encouragement Award went to some young fella with a grey beard called Turner.
Championships
S aturday was the first round of the men's club championships held in conjunction with a monthly medal.
Twenty three players turned up to start the ball rolling for 2002 with 12 in A grade, six in B grade and five in C grade. The winning score for the medal went to Pat Smith with a fine 75 nett 64 for the day. He was followed home with a neat 84 nett 67 from Wolf Moosmueller.
A grade - The leader after the first round was the winner of the monthly medal Pat Smith who served up a fine score in the blustery conditions with 75 strokes for the 18 holes.
Tony Webb was the next best with an 80 followed by Ian Hegarty 81, Ron Canlin 82, and Col Cooper 84. The rest of the grade was in the 90s.
B grade - The leader was Wolf Moosmueller with a pretty neat 84 strokes. This left him eight strokes in front of Val Boardman on 91 and Sepp Jakitsch with a 92. The rest were in the late 90s and early 100s.
C grade - The leader was Mick Derouet with a stroke score of 91, he was holding a three-stroke advantage on top of the legend John Mackay who was on 94 strokes.
Sunday Robert Handsaker Men's Open Tournament.
Sunday morning saw the players turn up from around the district to compete in the Robert Handsaker Lightning Ridge Mens Open Tournament. Players from Dirranbandi, Carinda, Brewarrina, Collarenebri, Sawtell, Walgett and our own Ridge gang - a total of 53 players.
Feli McHughes from Brewarrina was the A grade scratch winner.
Lightning Ridge players who received a place were: A grade - runner-up Ron Hogan, 18 hole handicap Chris Morris, handicap runner-up Ron Canlin, nine-hole scratch (morning) Jim Leahy, nine-hole handicap (morning) Ian Hegarty, nearest to the pin (4th) Adam Webb, all in the 13th Bryan Earl, veterans winner Brett Hyland, and the Bradman's Adam Webb.
B grade - scratch Brett Hyland, scratch runner-up Bryan Earl, 18 hole handicap Mick Derouet, 18 hole runner-up John Kimber, nine hole handicap (afternoon) Sepp Jakitsch, nearest to the pin (11th) Bryan Earl, long drive (8th) Dave McGuiness, Bradman's Paul Beaver.
C grade - scratch James Hegarty, scratch runner-up Nigel Webb, 18 hole handicap Terry Wohni, 18 hole handicap runner-up Dane Nexo, nine hole handicap (morning) Knud Nexo, nine hole scratch (afternoon) Felix Monch, nine hole handicap (afternoon) John Mackay, and long drive Dane Nexo.
Mens championships at end of second round:
A grade is still lead by Pat Smith on 156 just two ahead of Tony Webb on 158 with Ron Canlin on 159, Ian Hegarty on 163, Ron Hogan on 166 and Col Cooper on 170.
Wolf Moosmueller is leading B grade on 176 with Val Boardman on 183, then Sepp Jakitsch 184 and John Kimber 187.
Mick Derouet is leading C grade on 176 from James Hegarty on 194 and John Mackay on 195, Terry Wohni is next on 203.
This week
There will be a chook run all day tomorrow with the last hit off at 3:30pm. On Saturday the monthly medal/eclectic third round of the club championships will tee off at 12:30pm, and on Sunday the final round of the club championships from 9:30am.
