 Battle for the black opal

Battle for the black opal

31 Oct, 2002 09:52 AM
Well, what a week it has been.

One hundred and twenty-eight bowlers from Queensland and NSW, combined with some of our local talent, converged on Lightning Ridge for the seventh running of the Lightning Ridge Black Opal Classic.

Among them were last year's winner Ross Maguire, current State triples champion Steve Anderson, Wayne Lambourne from Maitland, Steve Morris from Inverell, Jeff Dolan from Queensland, Ken Carter from the Central Coast, Rod Robards from Kurri Kurri, Denis Hogan from Cunnamulla, Black Opal Prelude winner Mick Harry from Parkes, Mick Armstrong from Moss Vale, Lief Selby from Oak Flats and Neil Burgess from Ballina.

After two and a half days of sectional play, eight teams were left to play the quarterfinals, Ross Maguire, Steve Anderson, Terry McCabe, Aaron Sheriff, Leif Selby, Gerard Beath, Wayne Lambourne and Steve Morris.

In the quarterfinals, Maguire defeated Anderson, Sheriff defeated McCabe, Selby defeated Beath and Lambourne defeated Morris.

The semi-finals developed into nail biters with Selby defeating Maguire and Sheriff defeating Lambourne.

The final was a see-sawing tussle and the team of Sheriff, Knight, Gordon and Bohm held on to win by one point.

The winning team was Aaron Sheriff and Eddie Knight from the Central Coast and Henry Gordon and Rick Bohm from West Dubbo.

Having just recovered from that the Lightning Ridge club then played host to 30 bowlers from the Dubbo Macquarie RSL Bowling Club for the weekend.

With the beginning of daylight saving, starting times for social bowls have changed to the following: Tuesdays for men 6:30pm, Thursdays mixed 6:30pm, Sundays for men 8pm, and Sundays mixed 6:30pm.

The Lightning Ridge District Bowling Club Minor Singles Championship will be played this weekend and I noticed there are not many names on the board.

A fun day of bowls has been organised for this Saturday afternoon to raise funds for the new hospital and health service.

On Sunday evening a Friendship Day has been organised to commence with a barbecue at 6pm followed by a game of bowls.

There is a sheet on the notice board in the bowlers' bar to place your name on if you wish to play.

Who am I?

"I am the venue representative of the controlling body.

I am the officer responsible for the conduct of the event at the club which I am officiating."

How many club officials who take on this role are aware of their responsibilities?

Please take note of this; you will help yourself and the players under your jurisdiction.

Clubs, prior to the commencement of play you should always announce who is the representative of the controlling body on the day (Royal NSW Bowling Association condition 2.3); and who is the umpire (Royal NSW Bowling Association condition 2.13).

Bowls Unbiased was brought to you by the Barwon District Bowling Association for the information of bowlers in the Barwon district.
