The basketball registration and fun day held on Saturday afternoon saw about 20 players from Lightning Ridge and Walgett hit the court for a social game to mark the start of the season.
One of the organisers, Priscilla Strasek said they could have made four teams with the number of players but opted for two, and ensured each team had at least one woman on their side.
She said some juniors who had shown a keen interest came along to join the game as well.
The Ridge ended up winning 53-52.
"Even though we won, it was only by one point, Walgett gave us some really good competition."
She said the game went really well and was followed by a free throw shootout and three-point shootout competition.
"We divided the men and women for the shootout competitions to make it a bit more fair."
Ms Strasek said four prizes were handed out to the male and female player in each shootout who was able to get the most hoops.
"We just gave everyone a shot in a knockout type of competition, which meant as soon as a player missed the hoop they'd be out."
She said the barbecue wasn't held because the organising committee had anticipated more players keen to join would have turned up.
However, Ms Strasek said it appeared there were enough players signed up now to start a seasonal competition.
"A lot of people who had signed up earlier didn't turn up to our registration day, so we've got enough in the books for four women's teams and a couple of men's teams."
She said there would be no mixed teams in the competition.
"We're hoping to get the competition started on Tuesday night, but we are still seeking more players to form another few teams."
Anyone interested in joining can leave completed registration forms with Rhonda Ashby, Priscilla Strasek or at the sports centre.
