Awards for gym quartet

18 Apr, 2002 11:34 AM
Four Lightning Ridge gymnastics students have been awarded NSW Sport and Recreation's Active Australia Leadership Award for undertaking a coaching program.

Brock Dowleans said he and the other award recipients had been teaching the proper techniques to younger gymnasts.

He said the four also had to take part in a 12-hour lecture on how to coach the younger kids.

Both Brock and Dwayne Balsdon said they had taken part in the one-term-long program towards the end of last year.

"We had to do a series of four-hour lessons teaching what we had learnt and once a month participated in the lectures," Brock said.

Dwayne said he had decided to do the program because he had been working with the kids at the swimming pool and had been asked by his gymnastics instructor, Leanne Sweatman, to take part in the course.

Meanwhile, Brock said he just wanted to do the course, because he was interested and thought he would give a try.

"It is now easier for us to teach the younger kids because we were taught how to deal with them and teach them moves in a fun way," Dwayne said.

The pair now teaches every Wednesday afternoon.

"We didn't know we'd get an award but we have now completed Step 1 and 2," Brock said.

They said there were three steps to master before they could go for the leadership level, by which there were a further three or four steps to reach a Level 2 coaching standard.

"This will allow us to do vaults by ourselves without a higher level coach supervising us," Brock said.
