Association serves up fun day as fundraiser

10 Oct, 2002 10:45 AM
The Isolated Children's Parents' Association (ICPA) of Lightning Ridge/Goodooga held its annual fundraising event on Friday with a tennis/bowls family fun day.

ICPA member Penny Fahey said it was the first time the local branch had tried out this type of event as a fundraiser.

"We saw that the Walgett ICPA had run a tennis day successfully earlier this year in the last holidays and thought we'd have a go at it.

"Having a family fun day seemed like a good idea for the kids to be able to get together during the school break," Mrs Fahey said.

Thirty-three children from both the Goodooga and Lightning Ridge surrounding areas took part in the event.

An American-style tennis tournament, similar to a round-robin competition was played, where the children were divided into two groups for those aged under 12 and 12 years or over.

Mrs Fahey said their youngest participant was aged seven, while the oldest competing was 17.

"We had a good mix of boys and girls.

"All the kids had played tennis before, but there was a real range in ability and skills among the group which made for a good balanced match."

The children took part in doubles games, but converted to playing singles towards the end of the day to determine the winners.

In the 12 years and over age group Skye Cochrane won, with Fraser Pearce finishing runner-up, while for the under 12s Jack Scoles took the top position, with Steven Kelly coming in as runner-up.

Mrs Fahey said she felt the day was well supported by parents and children.

The Tennis/Bowls Family Fun Day also marked the first joint fundraiser the Lightning Ridge/Goodooga branch has had since its amalgamation at the beginning of this year.

"The money we raised on the day will go towards sending representatives to conferences and helps us keep in touch with other ICPA members across the State.

"The local ICPA branch is happy it was able to provide some of the children in the area with a highlight to their holidays and it allowed them to catch up with friends they might not have seen for awhile," Mrs Fahey said.

The children were also given the opportunity to try their hand at bowls, in between tennis matches.

Mrs Fahey said the local ICPA would plan to hold a similar type of event for next year as their annual fundraiser.
